Hi, I’m Nadine. With Amazon Alexa integration, you can control your Hopper, Wally, or Joey receiver with simple voice commands. Let me show you how to pair your Amazon Alexa to your receiver.

First, make sure your Alexa-enabled device is plugged in and set up. Next, on your mobile device, download the Amazon Alexa app from your phone’s app store. Log in to the app.

Select the Menu icon along the upper-left corner, and then “Settings.” Under the “Alexa Preferences” section, choose “TV & Video.”

Scroll down and select the plus symbol next to “DISH,” and then “Enable Skill.”

Go to your receiver’s menu by pressing the Home button twice or Menu button once on your remote, depending on the model. Select “Settings,” and then “Amazon Alexa.” Choose “Get Code.”

Enter the code on the TV screen into the Alexa app on your mobile device, and then select “Activate.” Select “Done” on your TV screen.

Then, in the Alexa app, choose “Next” to begin the linking process. Select the “X” at the top of the Alexa app, and then wait for Alexa to discover your DISH receiver.

Select the desired receiver from the list, and then choose “Continue.”

In the next window, select the desired Amazon Alexa device, and then “Link Devices.” Select “Link Another Device” to pair an Alexa-enabled device to another receiver. Or choose “Return to DISH” to finish.

Now, you can use Amazon Alexa to perform a bunch of commands. Say, “Alexa, turn on DISH” to watch TV.

You can search for shows, movies, actors, and more. Just say a command like, “Alexa, find Tom Hanks movies.” Or say, “Alexa, skip forward, skip back, or pause” to perform those actions when watching your shows.

Voice Commands

Get acquainted with a few common phrases and commands to help you make the most of your TV viewing experience.

Search

Alexa can perform an integrated search that returns results from across multiple platforms such as Netflix, Video on Demand, DVR, and the Guide, when applicable. You can search by program name, genre, or actor name criteria.

After Alexa retrieves your search results, use your DISH remote to select or play the desired choice.

“Alexa, search for The Big Bang Theory”
“Alexa, show me comedies”
“Alexa, find Tom Hanks movies”

Change the Channel

Change the channel by using a specific channel name or the channel number. Note, many events are still confused with apps or music when using the "play" command. Using "watch" tends to be more successful.

“Alexa, tune to ESPN”
“Alexa, go to channel 122”
“Alexa, watch Property Brothers”

Transport Controls

Alexa can enact transport controls like pause, resume, and skip back/forward. The more specific you are with these requests, the better, as phrasing can affect Alexa’s interpretation of your command.

For example, saying “Alexa, stop” may interfere with other commands currently being carried out.

“Alexa, stop recording”
“Alexa, play” or “Alexa, resume”
“Alexa, skip back” or “Alexa, skip forward”

(A timeframe can be specified, e.g. 60 seconds. If a timeframe is not stated, the default skip is 30 seconds.)

Play a DVR Recording

Alexa will play recorded content from your DVR. This can be a full and complete recording from your Recordings folder, or live TV that has been paused and is buffering – the content must already be recorded for playback to be able to initiate.

“Alexa, play Master Chef”
“Alexa, play Fixer Upper”

Navigation Shortcuts

Quickly access your Guide, DVR, Options, Live TV, and On Demand content!

“Alexa, go to On Demand”
“Alexa, go to guide”

Launch Apps

Launch apps like YouTube, Pandora, Game Finder, Weather Channel, and more, with your voice!

“Alexa, launch Game Finder”
“Alexa, go to Pandora”
“Alexa, launch the Weather Channel app”
